Outdoor Rugs
Defining Your Space with an Outdoor Rug
House by the Shore knows how
important an outdoor space can be to relaxation, entertaining, and life at the
beach. Your outdoor living space should be defined and as comfortable as your
indoor living spaces.
An outdoor rug can help you define your seating area, add
comfort to a space for small children to
play, or add a pop of color. When
choosing a rug for your patio, porch, or outdoor living space there are a few
key things you should keep in mind:
A general rule of thumb for size
is to choose a rug two feet less than the amount of space that you want to
cover. So for example, if your patio is
10’ x 12’ then you want to select an 8’ x 10’ rug.
Weather protected rugs or rugs that are treated tend to do better for outdoor spaces. Just because it says it’s an outdoor rug doesn’t mean that it’s going to last through horrible weather, it just means it has better durability than indoor rugs. These rugs usually also have a non-slip mat under the rug that is also beneficial outside.

Materials
are very important when buying an outdoor rug. A rug that combines both natural
and synthetic woven materials will usually have the highest durability. Natural
materials hold up better against the weather than other materials but synthetic
materials are cheaper and come in more styles.
Style
is important when choosing a rug for an outdoor space because it can tie
everything together. When you choose your outdoor rug, don’t worry about
lasting style as much as you would with your furniture. No matter its
durability, the rug most likely will only last a season or two so choose the
one you love in your style and budget range and have some fun!
