Accent Furniture

Use the Essentials Reflective Ottoman as an accent piece of furniture to add a touch or color and pattern to the room. It's also a useful piece of furniture for seating to put on shoes (who doesn't love looks and function?) Not to mention, very on trend today.

Hang the Piper Round Mirror set above the bed or over a chest for a fun take on mirrors and to add a golden metallic touch to the room that guests will love. We love the fun shapes and this modern twist coupled with the more traditional bed.

Every room needs multiple lamps and can't you just see a pair of these on either side of the bed. Add a touch of glamour to this beautiful upscale room with a pair of these Silvertone Glass Mercury Lamps

A pair of lamps of course need a pair of tables!  Let your lamps shine upon a gorgeous pair of tables with the Parma Side Table. We're just crazy about these pieces and love mixing metals and styles.  This is what adds personality to any room.

Memorial Day - History, Traditions & Remembrance

Lest we forget what it is really about!

An American holiday, Memorial Day became an official federal holiday in 1971.  Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May which is what gives us a long, three day weekend.  For many it is a symbol of the start of summer, but that isn’t really what it is all about.  This solemn holiday is a day that honors men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

quote from President Bill Clinton on National Moment of Remembrance
Many will honor these war dead by visiting cemeteries, holding family gatherings or participating in parades.  A resolution passed in December of 2000 calls for all Americans at 3:00 p.m. on Memorial Day to “voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of Remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to Taps.”  This resolution was passed in an effort to remind Americans the true meaning of this holiday and to promote a “National Moment of Remembrance.”

History

Vintage Postcard - Illustrator Unknown
Originally this day was a day of remembrance and called Decoration Day, this day was set aside to honor those who have died in service of this great nation we live in.  Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor those who gallantly served in one of our nation’s darkest hours.  General John A. Logan, a leader of an organization for Northern Civil War Veterans, proclaimed “the 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.”

Traditions

Lest we forget is a slogan often associated with Memorial Day. It comes from a poem entitled Recessional by Rudyard Kipling in 1897.  The poem is actually a prayer that we not forget the sacrifices of Jesus Christ but is often added as a line to the “Ode of Remembrance.”

For The Fallen is a poem written by Robert Laurence Binyon in 1914 to honor those who have sacrificed their lives in service.  A particular stanza of the poem is known as the “Ode of Remembrance” and is commonly used at Memorial Day services for many countries.

A poem titled “In Flanders Fields” and written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, is credited as the original inspiration for the Memorial Poppy.  McCrae composed this poem at the battlefront in Ypres, Belgium on May 3, 1915 during the First World War.  His poem inspired Moina Michael to compose a poem of her own We Shall Keep The Faith.  Moina’s poem was in response to McCrae’s plea in the last verse of his poem and she made this pledge to “keep the faith.”  Due to her tireless efforts and commitment to those who served, the red poppy has become an internationally-recognized symbol not only for remembrance but also for the welfare of veterans.

Memorial Day hits home for me!

My father and Uncle served in World War II along with America’s

greatest generation.  To hear the stories of what it was like, I know that we cannot even imagine what they went through and the sacrifices that were made.  On June 6, 1944, D-Day, Dad was on a boat about an hour and a half behind the original invasion of Normandy. He said the water was so choppy, most soldiers were sick and very anxious, not knowing what to expect.  We now know D-Day was the turning point in liberating Europe.  My father was lucky, he came home but so many didn’t in so many wars.

For all those who serve, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.  For all the families who carry on without their loved one, you have our gratitude.  And for the men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and to protect our great Nation – we cannot thank you enough for your courage and your valor.  We will not forget!  Your service and sacrifice will not be in vain.

Enjoy your Memorial Day holiday.  Whether you’re putting your toes in the sand, celebrating with family and friends or spending time working on your house or garden, we hope you’ll fly your flag proudly and stop to reflect for the National Moment of Remembrance.  Now, we’re going to go plant some poppies!

Finding great furniture for any kid’s room is often not easy. The bed needs to be high quality and durable. Children make lots of messes and can be really hard on furniture,  so you want a bed that will last. Which is why quality not quantity is an important thing to keep in mind when buying your son or daughter a new bed. Consider American made furniture as it is often a higher quality than those shipped from overseas, and you know that they meet safety standards here.

Why buy American Made?

Did you know that every $3.33 someone spends on American made products 10,000 new jobs are created?
That equals healthier families, happier lives, and a better economy. Money that is spent on USA products is also recycled back into the American economy.

The United States also requires companies to follow stricter regulations. The majority of these regulations keep poisons out of the products you buy. This means your kids are kept safer. The Federal Trade Commission also makes sure that companies follow the strict guidelines and that only those that do can use the Made in the USA emblem.

Our beds also have cute designs for a nautical touch on them such as crabs, palm trees, pelicans, flamingos and sail boats plus many more options!  They are custom made in South Carolina and you can choose the color and finish to personalize the furniture to your child's liking.  These beds add instant personality and charm to any bedroom whether by the shore or inland.

Outdoor Entertaining

Tips to Throwing a Summer Party

House by the Shore loves a good summer party and entertaining friends and family. Whether you are on the coast or bringing the coast home, no one hates a party with coastal flair or seafood but  it isn’t always easy to pull off. These tips below will help you set up and throw the best coastal party of the summer!

  • Choose a Theme: Coastal or nautical - you can also be more specific like yachting or anchors. This helps you define the night and create fun activities and an aura around you and guests with your décor.

  • Set a Smart Table: Patterned table clothes hide stains better than solid colors, while stacking plates and dishes on different levels will help to keep bugs away from food. Outlining tables with citronella candles will also help to keep mosquitoes away and guests more comfortable.

  • Music: Interesting tip – start with the music louder and turn it lower as more people arrive so people don’t shout over it as much, especially since usually the opposite happens.

  • Have plenty of seating. Arrange for seating both inside and outside so that your guests can mingle in the air conditioning and the summer breeze. Set up your furniture so people can sit for conversations in groups that aren’t too large or too small.

  • Pick a simple classic menu that keeps guests happy but easy for you. Offer a couple different entrees like grilled chicken and a seafood dish such as, grilled salmon with avocado salsa, with several side dishes to accompany them. Just don’t forget dessert! You can always do something fun and interactive like an ice cream or s’mores bar!

  • Tell everyone to BYOB or BYOW (wine) or whatever they choose. If you’d like to provide some provide one type like a certain beer or a signature cocktail, like a Spiked Pomegranate Cooler, to keep cost down.

  • Accept help from friends and don’t take it all on yourself. People love parties and they love to help - so let them. Also enjoy yourself. Have a couple of cocktails and take time to let loose with your friends.
