Outdoor Rugs
Defining Your Space with an Outdoor Rug
House by the Shore knows how
important an outdoor space can be to relaxation, entertaining, and life at the
beach. Your outdoor living space should be defined and as comfortable as your
indoor living spaces.
An outdoor rug can help you define your seating area, add
comfort to a space for small children to
play, or add a pop of color. When
choosing a rug for your patio, porch, or outdoor living space there are a few
key things you should keep in mind:
A general rule of thumb for size
is to choose a rug two feet less than the amount of space that you want to
cover. So for example, if your patio is
10’ x 12’ then you want to select an 8’ x 10’ rug.
Weather protected rugs or rugs that are treated tend to do better for outdoor spaces. Just because it says it’s an outdoor rug doesn’t mean that it’s going to last through horrible weather, it just means it has better durability than indoor rugs. These rugs usually also have a non-slip mat under the rug that is also beneficial outside.

Materials
are very important when buying an outdoor rug. A rug that combines both natural
and synthetic woven materials will usually have the highest durability. Natural
materials hold up better against the weather than other materials but synthetic
materials are cheaper and come in more styles.
Style
is important when choosing a rug for an outdoor space because it can tie
everything together. When you choose your outdoor rug, don’t worry about
lasting style as much as you would with your furniture. No matter its
durability, the rug most likely will only last a season or two so choose the
one you love in your style and budget range and have some fun!

Celebrate the Freshness of Spring!
Spring Coastal Table
Spring is one of our favorite seasons. While unpredictable as far as the weather is
concerned, the freshness of the season just makes you want to smile. The rains will come but the scent in the air
is so clean and refreshing. It makes
everything green up and look alive again after the long days of winter. Flowers begin to sprout and bloom, leaves
begin to bud on trees and thoughts turn to lighter, fresher meals.
At House By The Shore, when we think of cooking a big meal
and sharing it with friends, we also begin to think about how we will set and
decorate the table. We’re big believers
in pulling everyone around the table and not including those “electronic
devices” that tend to plague us all day long.
We stumbled across this divine recipe for Baked
Sole fillets which is healthy and uses fresh dill to season it from The Mediterranean Dish
blog. We’re going to pair it with Best Roasted
Greek Potatoes also from Suzy Karadsheh
and a Shaved
Brussels Sprouts & Pecorino Salad from Kendall-Jackson’s blog and Kelsey
Boyte. Kelsey has a blog of her
own called Happy Yolks but was a contributor to
Kendall-Jackson on this recipe. We’ve
actually had the Jackson
Estate Chardonnay 2012 Kelsey recommends and agree with her that it is
delightful so we’ll be serving it along with our meal.
Of course since we believe great
food deserves a great setting, we pulled together quickly some of our favorites
from our entertaining collection!
We’ll pull together a floral
centerpiece using some hydrangeas (a favorite of ours) and light some
candles. We’ll probably use 2 or three
on each side of the flowers of the ocean
blue votive candlestick and the ocean
blue seashell hurricanes. We’ll
use our blue
crab dinner plates designed by Eastern Shore artisan Jose Davis and our
pewter
coral handled flatware. We’ll
serve water in the sea
drops dark blue hi-ball glasses and the chardonnay in the octopus
pewter stem wine glass. For a
little extra seasoning and cute décor, we’ll have our pewter
seahorse salt and pepper shakers on the table. They’ll look great mixed in with the candles
and flowers.
Well, off to start cooking - wish
you could join us!

Outdoor Living - FINALLY!
Spring is here and we’re rushing outside!
After the winter most of us had, with warmer temperatures
and
longer days, our thoughts are turning to moving things outside! Outdoor living is not only a
pleasure but it is good for us. Fresh
air, enjoying nature and family without the distractions of TV and computers is
a joy. To really enjoy outdoor living,
we believe you have to furnish and decorate your outdoor spaces just as you
would your indoor ones. To lure people
outside into the fresh air, you need a comfortable and inviting space.
House By The Shore is delighted to
bring you the Veranda collection of outdoor furniture. We’re excited about these new arrivals and we’re
sure you’ll see why. This collection of outdoor furniture
is manufactured by a company in North Carolina.
Yes, they’re American made. The outdoor
furniture is available in two finishes – pressure treated pine or a
premium polymer. The pine is
domestically harvested southern yellow pine which has been pressure treated to
stand up to the elements. The polymer is
a recycled pre-consumer vinyl that is extremely durable and comes in 30 different finish color
options so you can truly personalize your look.
The Veranda
collection is generously scaledand heavy.
You’ll have this furniture
for years because of it has been hand-crafted by American furniture makers with
solid construction. It is designed for
all weather and is eco-friendly to boot.
The American styling is sure to grace your patio or porch with classic
elegance. By adding outdoor rugs, lighting,
accents
and pillows, you will
create an outdoor space as comfortable and inviting as the inside of your home.
